Where did the concept of "The Captain goes down with his ship" come from?

The Captain of a ship is  responsible for both his ship, her cargo and her passengers . It is his responsibilty to save others first and he is the last one to leave the ship after everyone is safely off.

It doesn't always happen as we have seen in recent passenger liner disasters but it is a code they are meant to abide by. By the captain being the last one off he has the highest chance of going down with his vessel.
