Great question and not something I will be able to answer fully, as a lot of if will depend on how you like to learn, but I believe this answer will provide you with a few hits and tips to get started.

First, let's look at the platform you want to build on, that's going to influence your research considerably. If you want to build an iOS application, I would recommend that you look into Swift.  If you're looking to build Android apps, I would recommend that you put your time into learning Java or Kotlin. If you want to build an application that works on both with the same source code, you could look at Cordova, Flutter. Take a look at some of the documentation for some of these, watch a few tutorials and see which you think would be right for your project.

Now you've picked a language you want to learn, how do you start to learn it. Well first I would recommend looking at the basics of programming, you could do this by using a site such as code academy which offers a selection of different course for a selection of different languages, their site is easy to use and digest. They may not offer some of the languages mentioned above, but they do offer languages such as javascript and python which aren't too hard to pick up and might be a nice introduction to programming if you're not already familiar. From there I would take a look at some of open source projects, find out how to build them, make edits, and play around. Slowly you begin to to learn what does and what doesn't work, there really is a endless amount of knowledge available surrounding programming available on the internet, especially with the languages mentioned above. Much of what I learn about programming is self taught and although I may not be an expert, I have been able to pick up quite a lot with the methods mentioned above and think this might be a step in the right direction for any wanting to get a grasp of some of the basics.

Right now I am learning during my spare time using a combination of MIT app Inventor 2 and Android Studio.
