As a symbol there can be a meaning attached to it, but that meaning changes from person to person, from doctrine to doctrine.
Some believe so and point to verses such as 1 Corinthians 1:18 to support that belief.
Other religions such as Latter Day Saints don't feature the cross as prominently because they believe the cross symbolizes a dying Christ rather than a living Christ.
