What do you think abot the idea of Universal Basic Income? How would it affect society?
2 ANSWERS

That would be a terrible idea. Let me explain as short as possible with an example.

First, let me say that the money has to come from somewhere, and that place is from the working people. You CAN NOT do that for a long time, people don't like to work hard to survive, to just give that money to someone else, so those working people would just opt out, just go somewhere else or just stop working. So more people will not work, and the working people have to pay more to keep that basic income running.

In short, it wold make people lazy. It like getting a trophy for just participating and it has as much value as a winner trophy. So after a while people will get bored and have no motivation to do better. Why would they, if they don't try, they get paid, if they do, they get robbed from their money.

But even thought I'm a capitalist, I think it should exist, but not by force. For example, by joining a group that provides that willingly.

The opposition of the UBI is mostly done on the basis of the fact that with 'free' money that is guaranteed to support people for life, they would loose motivation to work. The productivity of the society would plummet.

The opposition of the UBI is mostly done on the basis of the fact that with 'free' money that is guaranteed to support people for life, they would loose motivation to work. The productivity of the society would plummet........ these are all regular arguments that oppose the idea of UBI.

Although I do think the all these arguments hold merit, but I also believe that they are too shortsighted. These arguments assume that people work just to earn enough money to get by. The problem with this is that mankind by nature is inescapably greedy. Unlike the popular belief, greed is actually quite the motivator.

My reasons for being against UBI are more philosophical. Please don't confuse philosophical with complicated. My reasons are actually simple. I just think that people need to earn their place in society. Earning an income is part of that journey.

Secondly I also find a certain merit in the idea of UBI if it is implemented in interim periods - Such as a crisis or a place that has no work due the off-season unemployment, etc.
