I guess because the IQ of the majority of us is average and the ones "leading the world" and deciding for us in almost every aspect of our lives don't want us to become smarter. This bread and circus thing is being served to us since childhood with all sorts of cartoons and stupid video games because when you have billions of people "trapped" in video games, endless movies, social media and talk show you can lead them at ease. If people would read or do any other activity that rather helps us become smarter and more aware they would not accept everything that it is being offered to us. They would not accept health care to not be free to anyone, they would not accept the existence of unemployment, they would not accept so many diseases to be left without an actual treatment while the pharmaceutical companies sell every day all sort of medicines that make more harm than good. With bread and circus one or a group of people can keep humanity at a subsistence level where this bread and circus is the only joy and the rest of the time is dedicated to earning a living and stress over tons of problems. As Osho once said the leaders of the world don't want us to be smart, they don't want a society of intelligent people. They want people that are modern slaves who only work everyday and "eat during weekend and times-off" their bread and circus. So, yes, in my opinion this bread and circus thing is still successful because people are still vulnerable to this techniques and are too busy doing that to get up and stop that. To simply don't watch TV anymore and its stupid shows, to not buy the latest smartphone and spend hours a day browsing social media and to start eating and living healthy. I guess that humanity has gotten to its current situation over a long period of time and it's not something that popped over night. The whole thing was thought and set up for hundreds of years probably and it will take a strong will and a lot of time for humanity to get out of this hamster wheel and look beyond that the bread and circus. That's my opinion.
