I have seen three blockchains-ETH, EOS & STEEM where the gaming dapps are gaining a lot of popularity. While EOS & STEEM are really having good scalability, gaming dapps prefer to build their dapps on the top of these blockchains. But the most crucial thing in my opinion is no transaction fees of EOS and STEEM which makes it more attractive. Just imagine every time you roll a dice if you pay a certain fee, then it would be a considerable amount at the end of the day if you play heavily and in that sense ETH looks less attractive in my opinion as compared to EOS and STEEM blockchain.
Coming to your question, I must say that these are the seasons which are typically off seasons for crypto market. So the core adapters of crypto will definitely look for some way to earn more crypto. In off seasons or bear market, people usually look for either trading or gambling or something like that to make some money out of it and also make themselves engaged. I have a feeling like that especially in steem blockchain.
Also, people are looking upon the SMT release and as the dapps are offering tokens which in turn can yield dividends to the token holders, people are playing a lot of such games with an aim to earn some tokens so that they can earn some dividend on daily basis. Once the SMT is released, they can also sell their token. So there are lot of permutations and combinations going on into the minds of users which eventually driving them to play these games and in recent times it has really become a new trend of socializing in steem blockchain. I think the gaming sites in EOS chain are also getting more popularity and EOS chain performance is also very very awesome and seamless for such gaming sites. So the answer is yes, it is getting into a new trend of socializing but whether it will be long lasting trend or not, only time will tell. But for the time being more people are active in gaming dapps.
It seems to me that video games will have a great weight in the future of block chains, in Steem you can already feel a great impact with Steemmonsters and Drugwars, among others. I myself am looking to develop a game to attract new users to the block chain and one of the reasons for this is because everyone prefers to play on a site where they are rewarded for it
