What is the cause of Depression?

You might assume that nothing would make you happier than polishing off that super-sized double cheeseburger meal with a large milkshake, but actually the opposite is true -- recent studies suggest that eating junk food actually makes you depressed. People who regularly indulged in processed, high-fat and sugary foods were 58 percent more likely to suffer from depression than those who eat a healthy, balanced diet. 

So is a healthy diet really that much better for you? All the nutrients found in wholesome food compared to fast food affect mental health. High levels of antioxidants, folate and omega-3s are being credited with the positive mental health of those with a balanced diet. On the other hand, unstable blood sugar levels contribute to high levels of depression in junk food eaters. 

The bottom line? Junk food won't make you happy. Keep that in mind next time you're weighing up the merits of a salad versus a Whopper at lunchtime. 

In fact, poor eating may send you to therapy.



Depression is a state of mind were an hopeless individual feels the future has nothing good for him or her because a present chaotic situation that may be out of his or her control.

From my definition, chaos which is the cause of depression can be any situation ranging from just raising your voice on a timid kid to natural disaster pushing people out of their home and separating them from their family. 

People react differently to different situation, so what might push John into short-term depression maybe a fun experience for Jane as we are all wired differently. Losing a loved one will often make most people depressed generally while the depression period is different for everyone, even those that chooses not to show any sign of depression, may go through an episode eventually.

Depression can be traced to a single source or multiple sources (I.e. accumulated tragic event locked inside), so it may be difficult to pin point the cause of depression in some situation but generally perceived chaos is the cause of depression except for self-imposed depression which may be due to drug abuse.

Depression is known as a mental health disorder caused by persistent depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 7.6 percent of people over the age of 12 (twelve) have depression in any two (2) week period.

Let me share with you some causes of depression:

(1) Stressful Life Events can cause depression: Sometimes, stressful life events, may overwhelm a person's ability to cope, and this may be the cause of depression in one's life.

(2) Grief and Loss: Depression can also come through the loss of a loved one, and individuals experience many of the same symptoms of depression. Grief make one be depressed.

Grief is a common response to loss. Losses that may lead to grief include the death or separation of a loved one, loss of a job, or loss of a beloved pet, or any number of other changes in life, such as divorce or retirement. Anyone can experience grief and loss, but not everyone will experience depression.

(3) Brain Chemistry Imbalance: Scientifically, depression is known to be caused by an imbalance in the neurotransmitters which are involved in mood regulation.

Neurotransmitters are chemical substances which help different areas of the brain in communicating with each other. If certain neurotransmitters are in short supply, this may cause the symptoms we recognize as clinical depression.

(4) Physical Health Problems: As we all knew that the mind and the body are clearly linked together. If you are experiencing a physical health issue, you may discover changes in your mental health as well.

(5) Conflict: Depression may also result from personal conflicts or disputes with friends or family members.

(6) Abuse: Sexual, past physical or emotional abuse can cause depression in life. Anyone who experience one of those mentioned above may be the cause of depression

(7) Sadness, feeling down, having a loss of pleasure in daily activities - these are symptoms which most times we are familiar with. But, if they are persistent it can affect our life substantially, and this may lead to depression.

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in society. However, there is no definite cause of depression. This is usually the result of a combination of various complex factors which include:

Genetic factors. Having parents or siblings with depression can increase a person's risk of depression.

Biological factor. Depression can occur due to insufficient levels of serotonin in the brain. This condition is known as clinical depression.

Female sex. Women are twice as easily exposed to depression because of hormonal changes that occur during their lives. Such as during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth (postpartum depression), and perimenopause. Usually, the risk of depression in women will decrease after the age of menopause.

Bad diet. Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can trigger symptoms of depression.

Having chronic physical illness. Our minds and bodies are bound together. In most cases, ongoing stress and pain from chronic diseases can cause severe depression. In addition, certain diseases, such as thyroid disorders, Addison's disease and liver disease, can also cause symptoms of depression.

Psychological trauma that occurs during childhood, such as sexual abuse, parental loss, or parental divorce.

Drug abuse. Drugs and alcohol can trigger depression. Not only drugs, but also prescription drugs. Some prescription drugs related to depressive symptoms include anticonvulsants, statins, stimulants, benzodiazepines, corticosteroids, and beta-blockers.

Severe and chronic stress. The researchers suspect that the high levels of cortisol hormone can reduce serotonin levels and eventually trigger symptoms of depression.

Harbor emotions. Submitting emotions after losing someone who is loved or betrayed can make a person become depressed.

Environmental factors, for example the work environment. Stress in the office can sometimes also trigger depression.


Depression can be caused by traumatic experience or events

•death. Losing someone you really care about can affect your life negatively and can increase your chances of being depressed

•abuse. People who have been abused either during childhood or adulthood can become depressed especially when should abuse is continuous and they have no means of changing it.

•depression can also be genetic.

There are many other reasons why a person can be depressed. For deeper knowledge, I will advise that you perform an in-depth research on the subject.


Millions of adults suffer from various levels of depression every single day, with many receiving treatment and many not receiving treatment. Part of the hippocampus part of the brain is thought to play a role in depression, and although the latest research uses rats for explanation purposes of how certain electrical signals relay more slowly to cause depression, is there anything that can "speed them up?" Not sure, but I am sure that millions would love the chance of getting rid of depression without using drugs that have significant side effects.
