Overconfidence can affect us in many ways, but in my opinion, it's more aligned to the fact that it mainly comes hand in hand with underestimating others or certain situations.
I've dealt with overconfidence a lot in my life and they ways it managed to backfire to me are countless; My studies were very affected by my overconfidence, I used to spend little to no time studying because my Modus Operandi of thinking back then was "Damn i'm so cool and smart, I don't have to study that much at all." And then I'd end up getting lower than average grades and looking like a fool to my friends, teachers and my own parents as well, but most importantly myself.
Another way overconfidence can affect you is in terms of punctuality, and this still affects me on a daily basis (Something I gotta fix...) So in here you belittle whatever variables could affect you or your medium of transport in any sort of way. Thinking in a way of "Oh, I can probably get there on time" and then not being able to is completely disrespectful for your own persona. You're left with the reputation of not being able to attend commitments or date you set out for yourself. And again, you're being overconfident by underestimating outside variables that can affect you; There could be a car crash in front of your house, the bus could decide to come an hour later, your car might break down, etc.
Those examples ARE the ones which have affected me the most in terms of overconfidence. I would like to define the word in my own terms as "To think you can handle everything the world has to throw at you." which is obviously a lie; There are absolutely a very high number of things we probably can't handle out there in the real world and we should aknowledge this.
As a conclusion I think overconfidence leads to Recklessness and as a direct effect of this cause, we're left with a complete situation we're not ready to deal with. So the moral of the story is that it's okay if you're confident in yourself, but its always better to be cautious and prepared than to be bold and blunt. It's better to prevent certain situations than later be sorry for them even happening at all.
Defined as "an excess of confidence", overconfidence can negatively affect our lives by compromising our ability to make sound decisions, making us susceptible to various anti-social behaviors, and even endangering the lives of ourself and of others.
First, overconfidence can compromise our ability to make sound decisions. One of the ways overconfidence manifests is in the way we overestimate our abilities and performance. Whether that's being overconfident in our IQ, in our talents, or in our academic performance, overconfidence gives us the illusion that we are actually more than what we are.
The problem with this kind of thinking is that often times, it could compromise our ability to make sound decisions. Because overconfident people believe they are smarter, more talented, or more skilled than they really are, they would often place themselves in situations where they are truly out of depth, but are sorely unaware of it. A New York Times article described the situation as being"blind to their own blindness". Thus, we make our decisions with the confidence of an expert, when truly it just an amateur at the reins.
So, we end up making bad trades at the stock market, giving terrible advise to family and friends, and planning the worst wedding of all because we were overconfident in our abilities as a trader, a relationship expert, and even a wedding planner. Overconfidence's impact could even be something as simple as someone overestimating their abilities to finish a project on time, so they end up missing critical deadlines--definitely the picture of compromised decision making.
Second, overconfidence can make us susceptible to anti-social behaviors. A common side-effect of confidence is arrogance. We tend to think we are smarter than we are so are always mouthing off to our friends. If you think about the fact that this type of behavior is already annoying when exhibited by a truly smart person, then just imagine how much more annoying it is when the person regaling us with their "knowledge" isn't even smart, at all? That's the type of person others tend to stay away from. They're also the type that get left-off in group chats and uninvited to gatherings.
Overconfident individuals also tend to have poor social skills. According to several studies, individuals who have self-enhancement biases, meaning those people who have a high regard for themselves than is justified, are usually more irritable and hostile.
Finally, overconfidence, when exhibited by experts and other individuals who hold the lives of others in their hands can be danger to themselves and to others. It's one thing if a person's overconfidence leads a terrible singer to audition for a talent show, but it's an entirely different thing for an incompetent doctor to perform open-heart surgery. No wonder overconfidence has been blamed as one of the causes for some of the biggest tragedies in history--from the sinking of the Titanic, to the disaster in Chernobyl, and even the 2008 Financial Crisis.
Thus, overconfidence can really affect our lives in a negative way. I guess the lesson to be learned here is "moderation". After all, as bad as overconfidence seems, the opposite--a lack of confidence--is just as bad. So, the key is to find a balance so that individuals can have confidence in themselves and their abilities, without going off the deep end and deluding themselves that they're all that.
Hope this helps.
(On a side note, this is actually one of the reasons why I like to use a lot of sources on my answers here at Musing.io. I can't be overconfident in my personal knowledge. Lol!)
