2. Internal combustion + Small battery ( 3-4 Kwh) + regenerative breaking = Hybrid car

Think of first few generations of Prius , the small battery will support the car when running under 10-15 mph but will cut out if you go faster. This helps conserve fuel in stop and go conditions.

You cannot usually plugin the car to recharge the battery it charges through regenerative breaking.

3. Internal combustion + Medium battery ( 12-15Kwh) + regenerative breaking + Plug in to charge = PHEV ( plug in hybrid electric vehicle)

This is my fav.

Basically option 2 but you can go upto 50-60 miles ( even at higher speed) solely on battery and plug in the car to recharge the battery.

This way you can do all your daily drive tasks solely on electric but you can switch to petrol if you need to go for a long drive.

4. Pure electric = this is the Tesla option , no internal combustion engine for this option.

Only drawback is you have to keep the recharge stations in mind when planning long trips.
